The Arabic Master’s is a two-year cross-departmental research degree
with a substantial taught component concentrated mainly in the first
year (M1) (see links below for details). The taught component provides
both a practical and a theoretical grounding in the fields of History or
Literature ; some options in Linguistics are also available.
Whatever the field of the dissertation
topic, which is chosen by the student in consultation with her/his
supervisor, the range of courses a student is required to complete aims
to develop cross-disciplinary thinking. Student and supervisor decide
together on the choice of courses and seminars suitable to the research
topic ; students are encouraged to attend seminars not only at Paris 8
but also, if they wish, at other universities and research institutes in
Paris. This enables them to acquire a varied experience of French
academic life.
The dissertation is in two parts : a
detailed research proposal with critical bibliography, submitted at the
end of the first year, is, if approved, written up in full by the end of
the second year. The credits for both the taught components and the
research proposal are transferable automatically to MA/MLitt/MPhil
programmes at other European Union universities and to programmes
elsewhere by agreement.
